A Helensburgh- born entrepreneur has bought Loch Lomond Shores for more than £5 million with plans to make a “positive difference” to the tourist hotspot.

Simon Waterfield, who owns the Waterfield Group, recently completed the purchase of the Balloch attraction. Simon lived in Helensburgh as a boy and told the Lennox Herald he saw a great opportunity to invest in the development. He said: “We have now met most of the other stakeholders in the area and we are very enthusiastic about what the future holds for this iconic site.

“We look forward to making a positive difference to the site, the tourist sector and the local economy.”

His team have experience in the leisure- based retail sector and recently obtained consent for a 250,000 sq ft designer outlet centre at Scotch Corner in England.

Loch Lomond Shores opened in 2002 and now attracts more than one million visitors per year.

The leisure and shopping development will soon boast a new wedding venue, restaurant and spa after securing an investment from Scottish Enterprise and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

A spokesman for Loch Lomond Shores said:

The Waterfield Group have recently completed the purchase of Loch Lomond Shores for a figure well in excess of £5 million, advised by specialist asset manager SLR Outlets.

The group purchased the site from an Isle of Man fund, Sapphire Enterprises Limited, and the deal was completed only a matter of weeks ago.

The team have ambitious plans for the location and scheme and are set to accelerate recent modest improvements.

SLR developed and run the 45- acre destination retail and leisure scheme Springfields Outlet Centre in Lincolnshire, which attracts 2.35 million visits per year and is one of the fastest- growing centres in the UK.

It has been reported that Mr Waterfield obtained a loan from the challenger bank Cambridge and Counties (C&C) to help complete the purchase.
